What is BS EN ISO 15614-2 about?

Welding procedure qualification is about demonstrating that a proposed joining process is going to produce joints that are adequate for the intended application. The second in a series of 12 international welding qualification standards, BS EN ISO 15614-2:2025 is specifically concerned with testing procedures for the arc welding of aluminium and its alloys.

Who is BS EN ISO 15614-2 - Arc welding of aluminium for?

Engineers, welding engineers, structural engineers, engineering managers and manufacturers in:

  • structural engineering
  • oil and gas
  • energy
  • nuclear
  • pressure vessels and equipment
  • chemical plant
  • shipbuilding.

What does BS EN ISO 15614-2 - Arc welding of aluminium cover?

It specifies how a preliminary welding procedure specification (pWPS) is qualified by welding procedure tests. It defines the conditions for the execution of welding procedure tests and the range of qualifications for welding procedures for all practical welding operations within the range of variables.
BS EN ISO 15614-2 applies to the arc welding of wrought and cast aluminium and its alloys. It does not apply to finishing welding of aluminium castings.

The principles in BS EN ISO 15614-2:2025 may be applied to other fusion welding processes.

Why should you use BS EN ISO 15614-2 - Arc welding of aluminium?

  • It’s current – it’s been fully revised, bringing it up to date with the latest technology and practice. All new welding procedures should now be carried out using BS EN ISO 15614-2:2025.
  • Quality assurance – it provides a framework for testing and evaluating welding procedures that will help you meet all applicable requirements and standards, and to consistently maintain the quality of welds and welded products.
  • Risk mitigation – weld defects and failures can create safety hazards, lead to product failures and incur costly repairs. BS EN ISO 15614-2:2025 can reduce these risks by ensuring the quality of weld procedures.
  • It’s easier to use – because it’s now aligned with the other revised standards in the series and includes current normative references.
  • It’s good for business – because it can reassure your customers of the quality and reliability of your welding operations.

What’s new about BS EN ISO 15614-2:2025?

This is a technical revision of BS EN ISO 15614-2:2005. BS EN 15713:2025 has been updated and brought in line with other recently published documents in the series. Normative references have also been updated throughout.
