What is ISO 16781 about?

ISO 16781 specifies the requirements for simulation of the space control system, including the objective, architecture, procedure, etc.

ISO 16781 applies to four phases of control system development, including conceptual design, detailed design, prototype, and integrated system.

The control system referred to in ISO 16781 is the flight control system for guidance, navigation, and control (GNC) of space systems which include launch vehicles, satellites, spaceships, etc.

ISO 16781 focuses on requirements for simulation of the flight control system and guides engineers on what to simulate in each phase of control system development.

Who is ISO 16781 for?

ISO 16781 on space control system is applicable to:

  • Space control system engineers
  • Space simulation engineers
  • Space activity operators
  • Quality control / testing and compliance personnel for space
  • Aerospace and defence industries
  • Agencies involved in making aerospace applications
  • Spacecraft manufacturing industries
  • Testing agencies involved in the inspection of aerospace products

Why should you use ISO 16781

Space simulation is an important means to design, analyse and validate the space control system, and it is widely used in each phase of space control system development. ISO 16781 guides space control system engineers, simulation engineers, and customers with guidance for using simulation to support their system engineering tasks. Following guidelines provided in ISO 16781 for design phase and simulation, you can ensure that the proposed or designed space control system will function as desired.

ISO 16781 helps you to reduce the development time and cost of space control system design and also enhance its quality and reliability.

The guidelines provided in ISO 16781 related to simulation helps engineers and technical decision-makers to evaluate the feasibility, validity, and rationality of the design scheme more accurately.

By adopting ISO 16781, engineers and manufacturers can demonstrate the reliability of their space control systems and build trust in its use throughout the aerospace supply chain.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS ISO 16781:2021 supersedes BS ISO 16781:2013. BS ISO 16781:2021 includes some technical changes concerning BS ISO 16781:2013. These include:

  • The Introduction and the Scope have been revised; the scope is re-stated to concentrate on the simulation requirements of the flight control system of space system
  • The definition of “control system” in 3.1.2 has been revised
  • Some statements have been added in 8.1 to explain the usage requirements of actual hardware devices for prototype phase simulation
