What is BS EN 16603-40 - Software in Space engineering about?

BS EN 16603-40 concerns the “product software”, i.e., software that is part of a space system product tree and developed as part of a space project. BS EN 16603-40 is applicable, to the extent defined by the tailoring process, to all the elements of a space system, including the space segment, the launch service segment, and the ground segment.

BS EN 16603-40 defines the scope of the space software engineering processes and its interfaces with management and product assurance, which are addressed in the Management (–M) and Product assurance (–Q) branches of the ECSS System, and explains how they apply in the software engineering processes.

BS EN 16603-40 also applies to the development of non–deliverable software that affects the quality of the deliverable product. BS EN 16603-40 has been developed to cover specifically space systems and has therefore precedence over any EN covering the same scope but with a wider domain of applicability (e.g.: aerospace).

Who is BS EN 16603-40 - Software in Space engineering for?

BS EN 16603-40 on software in space engineering is useful for:

  • Software developers of space systems
  • Software testers of space systems
  • Aeronautical engineers
  • Space researchers

Why should you use BS EN 16603-40 - Software in Space engineering?

BS EN 16603-40 defines the principles and requirements applicable to space software engineering. ECSS-Q-ST-80 defines the principles and requirements applicable to space software product assurance. The formulation of BS EN 16603-40 takes into account the existing ISO 9000 family of documents and the ISO/IEC 12207 standard. BS EN 16603-40 covers all aspects of space software engineering including requirements definition, design, production, verification and validation, transfer, operations, and maintenance.

BS EN 16603-40 reflects the specific methods used in space system developments and the requirements for the software engineering processes in this context.

BS EN 16603-40 helps the users to formulate their requirements and suppliers to prepare their responses and to implement the work. BS EN 16603-40 may be tailored for the specific characteristics and constraints of a space project in conformance with ECSS-S-ST-00.
