What is BS EN 16603-10-12- Method for the calculation of radiation about?

BS EN 16603-10-12 aims to implement a space system engineering process that ensures common understanding by participants in the development and operation process (including agencies, customers, suppliers, and developers) and the use of common methods in the evaluation of radiation effects.

BS EN 16603-10-12 defines the mechanical engineering requirements for materials. It also encompasses the effects of the natural and induced environments to which materials used for space applications can be subjected.

BS EN 16603-10-12 outlines the requirements for the qualification, procurement, storage and delivery of the main assemblies and components of the space solar array electrical layout: photovoltaic assemblies, solar cell assemblies, bare solar cells and cover-glasses.

BS EN 16603-10-12 has been developed to cover specifically space systems and has therefore precedence over any EN covering the same scope but with a wider domain of applicability (e.g.: aerospace).

BS EN 16603-10-12 has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/CLC/TC 5 “Space”, the secretariat of which is held by DIN.

Who is BS EN 16603-10-12- Method for the calculation of radiation for?

BS EN 16603-10-12 on method for the calculation of radiation is useful for:

  • Spacecraft and space products manufacturers
  • Aerospace products manufacturers
  • Testing agencies involved in the inspection of spacecraft and aerospace products
  • Quality control personnel for spacecraft products
  • Aeronautical engineers
  • Space researchers

Why should you use BS EN 16603-10-12- Method for the calculation of radiation?

BS EN 16603-10-12 is a part of the System Engineering branch of the ECSS engineering standards and covers the methods for the calculation of radiation received and its effects and a policy for design margins. Both natural and manmade sources of radiation (e.g., radioisotope thermoelectric generators, or RTGs) are considered in BS EN 16603-10-12.

BS EN 16603-10-12 is complemented by ECSS-E-HB-10-12 “Radiation received and its effects and margin policy handbook”. BS EN 16603-10-12 may be tailored for the specific characteristic and constrains of a space project in conformance with ECSS-S-ST-00.

The guidelines in BS EN 16603-10-12 help in the evaluation of radiation effects on all space systems. BS EN 16603-10-12 applies to all product types which exist or operate in space, as well as to crews of manned space missions. BS EN 16603-10-12 also guides you with specification for when and how to apply such margins.

BS EN 16603-10-12 assures a safe and comfortable environment for human beings undertaking a space mission. When other forms of life are accommodated onboard, this standard also ensures the appropriate environmental conditions for those living organisms.
