What is BS EN 15935 about?

In soil science, the loss on ignition test is conducted to analyze the minerals and chemical makeup of the soil. After strongly heating the sample, you determine the mass of what is left.

BS EN 15935 specifies a method for the determination of the loss on ignition (LOI) at 550 °C. The dry matter is determined according to EN 15934.

BS EN 15935 applies to the determination of loss on ignition of sediment, sludge, treated biowaste, soil and waste.

Note: The loss on ignition is often used as an estimate for the content of organic matter in the sample. Inorganic substances or decomposition products (e.g., H2O, CO2, SO2, O2) are released or absorbed and some inorganic substances are volatile under the reaction conditions.

Who is BS EN 15935 for?

BS EN 15935 on loss of ignition for soil, waste, treated biowaste and sludge is useful for:

  • Waste management authorities
  • Waste disposal and recycling plants
  • Research laboratories
  • Geologists

Why should you use BS EN 15935?

Loss on ignition helps in estimating the organic and inorganic matter in soil, waste, treated biowaste and sludge.

BS EN 15935 guides you through the entire procedure and requirements of the loss on ignition  test at 550 °C. BS EN 15935 will also help you in expression of test results and their classification. This will make the process of waste classification simpler and also aid in reducing the cost of waste management.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 15935:2021 supersedes EN 15169:2007 and EN 15935:2012.

In comparison with the previous editions, the following technical and editorial modifications have been made:

  • Two existing standards have been combined
  • The scope defines more sample types
  • The criteria for the heating time are specified
