What is ISO 9455-9 about?

ISO 94559 is the ninth element of the multi-series international standard that covers the soft soldering fluxes.

ISO 9455-9 specifies a distillation method for the determination of the ammonia content of solid, paste, or liquid fluxes. The method is applicable to fluxes of class 311 and 321 only. It gives technical specifications such as terms, definitions, the principle of the test, reagents, apparatus, procedure, calculation of results, precision data and states the test report for the determination of ammonia content.

Who is ISO 9455-9 for?

ISO 9455-9 on the determination of ammonia content applicable to:

  • Electronic and Electrical Industries
  • Soft soldering fluxes manufacturers
  • Welding equipment manufacturers
  • Manufacturer of aircraft & aerospace
  • Automotive, mechanical Industries
  • Suppliers of soft soldering fluxes

Why should you use ISO 9455-9?

Fluxes assist molten solder in wetting metal surfaces to be connected by eliminating oxides and other impurities from the solder and the surfaces of the parts during soldering. Fluxes also prevent surfaces from oxidation and help molten solder moisten the base metals.

ISO 94559 gives you guidelines for carrying the test method for the determination of ammonia content. It specifies the factors contributing to the test such as reagents, apparatus, preparation of the flux test samples, etc, which can be considered while performing the test on fluxes.

ISO 94559 also gives you provisions for potential health and safety hazards that help to improve the quality of metallic welded joints and assemblies and are beneficial for the health and safety of workers.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN ISO 9455-9:2020 supersedes BS EN ISO 9455-9:1996, which is withdrawn. BS EN ISO 9455-9:2020 includes some technical changes as follows:

  • Clause 2 has been updated and new Clause 3, Terms, and definitions, has been inserted
  • The coding of the fluxes has been updated in accordance with ISO 94541:2016.
