What is BS EN 12274-2 - Determination of residual binder content of slurry surfacing about?

BS EN 12274-2 is the second part of the BS EN 12274 series of standards that discusses slurry surfacing. BS EN 12274-2 specifies test methods for determining the residual binder content of samples of slurry surfacing mixtures.

BS EN 12274-2 describes the method for preparing the specimens and for removing water from the samples before carrying out the extraction test.

Note1: The method described in BS EN 12274-2 needs to be used only to determine the quantity of binder and not to investigate its quality.

Note2: BS EN 12274-2 applies to slurry surfacing to be used in surface layers for roads, airfields and other trafficked areas.

Who is BS EN 12274-2 - Determination of residual binder content of slurry surfacing for?

BS EN 12274-2 on the determination of residual binder content of slurry surfacing is useful for:

  • Road and transport department
  • Manufactures of binders
  • Civil engineers
  • Construction companies
  • Contractors

Why should you use BS EN 12274-2 - Determination of residual binder content of slurry surfacing

The amount of binder added to the slurry mixture cannot be too excessive or too little. Enough binder content will help in the complete coating of the aggregates and the void within the slurry mixture is sealed up.

BS EN 12274-2 provides test methods for determining the quantity of residual binder present in the sample. This will help in adding the right amount of content to the slurry mixture which will ensure the durability and stability of the slurry surfacing mixtures.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 12274-2:2018 supersedes BS EN 12274‑2:2003, which is withdrawn.

BS EN 12274-2:2018 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 12274‑2:2003

These include:

  • Binder content by ignition is enabled using BS EN 12697‑39
  • An alternative method to oven-drying prior to binder extraction can be used with provision for collection of water during the solvent extraction process, as specified in BS EN 12697‑1:2012
