Currently, across Europe, several different systems are used for the size designation and labelling of clothes. This is confusing for consumers and creates inefficiencies across the supply chain. The objective of BS EN 13402-3 is to harmonize and simplify the size labelling of clothes for the benefit of consumers and the industry generally.
BS EN 13402-3 provides the flexibility to cover all body shapes and garment types. To size mass-produced clothes, the body size of the intended wearer needs to be defined and identified. To communicate the size of a garment clearly and visibly, a pictogram is used together with the body size ranges of the intended wearer.
Within BS EN 13402-3, the values and intervals are provided for reference purposes as examples of best practice and have been adjusted considering the latest sizing surveys carried out in Belgium, France, Germany, Netherlands, Romania, Spain, and Sweden.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN 13402-3:2017 supersedes BS EN 13402‑3:2013. BS EN 13402-3:2017 includes some technical changes concerning BS EN 13402‑3:2013. These include:
- A new title to better relate to the content of the standard
- A new scope to better relate to the content of the standard
- Reduction of repetitive information throughout the text
- Tables 2, 3, 5, 7, 13, 14, 18, 19, 20, 27, 30, 37, 38 have been removed
- All tables have been moved to a new Annex A and separated into sections, men, women, children, head hand and foot and letter size
