What is ISO 13742 about?

ISO 13742 is an International Standard that discusses requirements for universal fairleads used for mooring and towing purposes.

ISO 13742 specifies the types, nominal sizes, dimensions, and materials, as well as construction, manufacturing, and marking requirements, for universal fairleads without upper roller(s) installed to lead the mooring rope of a ship.

Who is ISO 13742 for?

ISO 13742 on for universal fairleads is applicable to:

  • Marine industry
  • Manufacturers of universal fairleads
  • Shipbuilding and naval products manufacturers
  • Vessel parts and equipment manufacturers
  • Design engineers for universal fairleads

Why should you use ISO 13742?

The universal fairlead is a type of ship’s mooring fitting installed on board to lead the mooring rope from the ship’s inboard to outboard. A universal fairlead without an upper roller is used for vessels in which the mooring deck level is higher than the quayside.

The guidelines provided in ISO 13742 helps in manufacturing standardised universal fairleads with specific dimensions as per your requirements. As a result, you can make improved choices based on the type, size, and materials so as to meet normal mooring and towing requirements.

ISO 13742 provides guidelines on inspecting surfaces in contact with the ropes such that they are free from surface roughness or irregularities, thus preventing damage to the ropes from abrasion. For this purpose, ISO 13742 also provides guidance on the necessary anti-corrosion protective finish for external coating.

As a manufacturer, complying with ISO 13742 to ensure of high-performing universal fairleads, can ultimately help in reducing the abrasion of mooring ropes, while efficiently changing direction without snagging or fouling. In addition, concerns of deformation and resulting fractures can be minimised with the right selection of universal fairleads.

With increased stiffness and fairlead strength, you can demonstrate the reliability of your products and build trust in their use throughout the marine supply chain by adhering to ISO 13742.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS ISO 13742:2020 supersedes BS ISO 13742:2012. BS ISO 13742:2020 includes some technical changes concerning BS ISO 13742:2012. These include:

  • Technical guidelines have been added in 7.3 and 7.4
  • The object lines and key numbers in Figures 1, 2, 3, and 4 have been amended
  • The thickness of the bushes and washers have been added in Table 5 (former Table 3)
  • The numbering of A.2.2, A.3, and A.4 have been corrected
  • The dimension line (θ1) in Figure A.2 has been amended
  • Technical information on FEM & strength calculation has been added in A.3.2 and A.3.3
