What is ISO 15540 - Ships and marine technology about?

ISO 15540 is an international standard on ships and marine technology that discusses the test methods on fire resistance of nonmetallic hose assemblies and non-metallic compensators. ISO 15540 specifies a test procedure for determining the fire resistance of non-metallic hose assemblies and non-metallic compensators with a nominal diameter of up to 150 mm. It may be used for larger sizes provided proper test bench conditions are obtained.

It serves for proving whether, after the period of fire effect on the test bench specified in ISO 15541, hose assemblies and non-metallic compensators continue to be tight, even when subjected to proof pressure.

Only water is permitted as a test medium. With a view to ensuring maximum safety for both the operating personnel and the test bench in the event of damage to the hose or non-metallic compensator during the test, the use of combustible test media is excluded.

Who is ISO 15540 - Ships and marine technology for?

ISO 15540 on ships and marine technology is relevant to:

  • Shipping industry
  • Marine engineer
  • Fire engineer

Why should you use ISO 15540 - Ships and marine technology?

Hoses can be used in water or other liquid environments, or to convey air or other gases. Hoses are used to carry fluids through the air or fluid environments, and they are typically used with clamps, spigots, flanges, and nozzles to control fluid flow.

ISO 15540 provides guidance on the test specimen and specimen preparation, number of the test specimen, test bench, test performance.

As a user of ISO 15540, you can determine whether and for a safety period a non-metallic hose (made of rubber) assembly or non-metallic compensator (bellow made of rubber) can be exposed to fire without becoming inoperable when subjected to the design working pressure. with ISO 15540  you can be ensured of fire resistance of nonmetallic hose assemblies and non-metallic compensators.
