What is BS EN 60143-1 - Install and operate series capacitors for power systems about?

Electrical power systems are essential for both homes and industries as a source or supplier of power. BS EN 60143-1 applies both to capacitor units and capacitor banks intended to be used connected in series with an a.c. transmission or distribution line or circuit forming part of an a.c. power system having a frequency of 15 Hz to 60 Hz. The series capacitor units and banks are usually intended for high-voltage power systems. BS EN 60143-1 applies to the complete voltage range. BS EN 60143-1 does not apply to capacitors of the self-healing metallized dielectric type.

For standard types of accessories such as insulators, switches, instrument transformers, external fuses, etc. see the pertinent IEC standard.

NOTE 1: Additional requirements for capacitors to be protected by internal fuses, as well as the requirements for internal fuses, are found in IEC 601433. See also Annex C.

NOTE 2: Additional requirements for capacitors to be protected by external fuses, as well as the requirements for external fuses, are found in Annex A and Annex C.

NOTE 3: A separate standard for series capacitor accessories (spark-gaps, varistors, discharge reactors, current-limiting damping reactors, damping resistors, circuit-breakers, etc.), IEC 601432, has been revised and was completed in 2012. A separate standard for internal fuses for series capacitors, IEC 601433 has been revised and was completed in 2013.

NOTE 4: Some information regarding fuseless capacitor units and fuseless capacitor banks are found in Annex C.

Who is BS EN 60143-1 - Install and operate series capacitors for power systems for?

BS EN 60143-1 on install and operate series capacitors for power systems is useful for organizations associated with:

  • Residential and commercial power system
  • Maintenance and augmentation
  • Fault management
  • Frequency and voltage management

Why should you use BS EN 60143-1 - Install and operate series capacitors for power systems?

Series capacitors increase the transmission capacity and the stability of the transmission line. They compensate for the inductance of the line and are used for energy storage.

BS EN 60143-1 provides guidance on installation and operation of capacitors, formulates uniform rules regarding performance, testing and rating and specific safety rules of series capacitors. BS EN 60143-1 also provides service conditions, quality requirements for capacitor unit, insulation level, overloads, overvoltages, duty cycles etc. The primary focus of BS EN 60143-1 is on transmission application. The guidelines in BS EN 60143-1 help you install and operate series capacitors for power systems, so the end customers can have a  superior quality product.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 60143-1:2015 supersedes EN 601431:2004. BS EN 60143-1:2015 includes some technical and editorial changes with respect to EN 601431:2004. These include:

  • The endurance test has been replaced by an ageing test because voltage cycling is already performed in the cold duty test
  • The guide section has been expanded regarding long line correction and altitude correction
  • The insulation tables and references to other standards have been updated
