What is ISO 668 about?

ISO 668 discusses shipping containers. ISO 668 establishes a classification of series 1 freight containers based on external dimensions, and specifies the associated ratings and, where appropriate, the minimum internal and door opening dimensions for certain types of containers.

These containers are intended for intercontinental traffic.

ISO 668 summarizes the external and some of the internal dimensions of series 1 containers. The dimensions of each type of container are defined in the appropriate part of ISO 1496, which is the authoritative document for internal container dimensions.

Who is ISO 668 for?

ISO 668 on series 1 freight containers is useful for:

  • Container manufacturers
  • Shipping companies
  • Port authorities
  • Quality control personnel

Why should you use ISO 668?

Freight containers are one of the most reliable means of packaging for all kinds of goods. They ensure that the goods don’t get compromised during the long transit period of intercontinental travel. Freight containers need to meet certain dimension requirements or else their functionality gets compromised.

ISO 668 specifies the external dimensions and their tolerances for freight containers. ISO 668 also specifies the minimum internal dimension requirements for freight containers. Adhering to ISO 668 guidelines will ensure that your freight containers meet the required quality ratings for intercontinental transit.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS ISO 668:2020 cancels and replaces the sixth edition (ISO 668:2013), which has been technically revised. The main change in BS ISO 668:2020 compared to ISO 668:2013 is the inclusion of the amendments.
