What is PD IEC/TR 62660-4 – Secondary lithium-ion cells about?

PD IEC/TR 62660-4 is an international standard that discusses the test methods for the internal short circuit test for secondary lithium-ion cells for the propulsion of electric road vehicles. Lithium-ion cells use either carbon or graphite as the anode and the cathode uses one of the following three: lithium cobalt oxide, lithium iron phosphate, or lithium manganese oxide.

PD IEC/TR 62660-4 provides the test data on the candidate alternative test methods for the internal short circuit test. The internal short circuit test in PD IEC/TR 62660-4 is intended to simulate an internal short circuit of a cell caused by the contamination of conductive particles, and to verify the safety performance of the cell under such conditions.

PD IEC/TR 62660-4 is applicable to the secondary lithium-ion cells and cell blocks used for propulsion of electric vehicles (EV) including battery electric vehicles (BEV) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV).

Who is PD IEC/TR 62660-4 – Secondary lithium-ion cells for?

PD IEC/TR 62660-4 on secondary lithium-ion cells applies to:

  • Manufacturer of lithium cells
  • Quality testing personnel
  • Electrical engineer

Why should you use PD IEC/TR 62660-4 – Secondary lithium-ion cells?

Lithium-ion (Li-ion) Li-ion batteries, along with lead-acid batteries, are arguably the most commonly known secondary batteries. Lithium-ion cells use either carbon or graphite as the anode and the cathode uses one of the following three: lithium cobalt oxide, lithium iron phosphate, or lithium manganese oxide.

PD IEC/TR 62660-4 provides you with the test procedures and acceptance criteria for the safety performance of secondary lithium-ion cells and cell blocks used for propulsion of electric vehicles (EV) including battery electric vehicles (BEV) and hybrid electric vehicles (HEV). PD IEC/TR 62660-4 also provides candidates with alternative test procedures.

PD IEC/TR 62660-4 provides you with detailed guidance regarding test conditions and the parameters of an alternative test. The test results are evaluated by the disassembly of the cell, X-ray observation, etc.
