BS 5293 is a series on sampling and testing carbon black for use in the rubber industry. Carbon black is a material produced by the incomplete combustion of heavy petroleum products such as fluid catalytic cracking tar, coal tar, ethylene cracking tar, or vegetable matter.  

Carbon black is a form of paracrystalline carbon that has a high surface-area-to-volume ratio, albeit lower than that of activated carbon. BS 5293-20 specifies standard materials, equipment, and processing methods for evaluating carbon black in styrene-butadiene rubbers (SBR).
