What is BS 6783-8 – Nickel, ferronickel and nickel alloys about? 

BS 6783-8 is a British standard and the eighth part of the BS 6783 series that discusses the determination of sulphur in nickel, ferronickel and nickel alloys by iodimetric titration after induction furnace combustion. Nickel alloys containing 72-83% nickel have the best soft magnetic properties and are used in transformers, inductors, magnetic amplifiers, magnetic shields and memory storage devices. 

BS 6783-8 specifies a titrimetric method after combustion for the determination of the sulfur content of nickel and ferronickel in the range 0,001 to 0,3 % (m/m) and of nickel alloys in the range 0,002 to 0,1 % (m/m).

Why should you use BS 6783-8 – Nickel, ferronickel and nickel alloys? 

Nickel alloys containing 72-83% nickel have the best soft magnetic properties and are used in transformers, inductors, magnetic amplifiers, magnetic shields and memory storage devices. The iodometric titration is a general method to determine the concentration of an oxidising agent in a solution. 

BS 6783-8 provides you with the determination of sulphur in which Sulphur is determined by Iodate titration or IR detection. A total of 97% of sulfur in the sample is converted to sulphur dioxide by burning the sample in oxygen at high temperatures. Sulfur dioxide is determined by direct titration with iodine. The combined sulfur dioxide is subsequently determined by iodometric titration after alkaline hydrolysis. This helps you in sampling and analysing nickel, ferronickel and nickel alloys.
