BS 6200-3.11.1 standard is a part of the BS 6200 series that discusses the determination of cobalt for steel and cast iron using the spectrophotometric method for sampling and analysis of iron, steel and other ferrous metals. Ferrous metals such as cast and wrought iron or carbon steel are known for their tensile strength and durability. 

BS 6200-3.11.1 describes a spectrophotometric method for the determination of cobalt in steel and cast iron. The method is applicable to cobalt contents from0.04 % (m/m) to 12 % (m/m).

BS 6200-3.11.1 provides you with the principle in which the test portion is dissolved in a phosphoric-sulfuric acid mixture and oxidized with nitric acid. The reddish-brown coloured complex of cobalt with nitroso-R-salt is developed after adding sodium acetate as a buffer. BS 6200-3.11.1 also provides the determination of cobalt in steel and cast iron which includes: Preparation of the test solution, development of the colour, compensating solution and spectrophotometric measurement.
