What is BS EN 71-13about?
When we design toys to stimulate the minds and senses of children, safety guidelines need to be kept in mind. BS EN 71-13 applies to olfactory board games, cosmetic kits, gustative games, and supplementary sets. BS EN 71-13 specifies requirements on the use of substances and mixtures and in some cases on their amount and concentration in olfactory board games, cosmetic kits, gustative games, and supplementary sets to such games or kits.
Note: BS EN 71-13 does not apply to cosmetic toys such as play cosmetics for dolls.

Why should you use BS EN 71-13?
BS EN 71-13 intends to reduce the risks and health hazards to a child when olfactory board games, cosmetic kits, and gustative games are used. BS EN 71-13 specifies warning phrases and instructions for use for these toys and these fragrances are permitted provided that such presence is technically unavoidable under good manufacturing practice and does not exceed 100 mg/kg per fragrance.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN 71-13-2021 supersedes EN 71-13:2014 will be withdrawn at the latest by April 2022.
The main change compared to EN 71-13:2014 is as follows:
- Requirements of olfactory board games, cosmetic kits, gustative games, on equipment, in particular regarding containers and glassware, closure for child resistance, general warnings, and markings has been revised
