What is BS EN 1034-8 - Safety in paper refining plants about?
Operating machines safely is clearly vital. Hazards related to paper refining plants include Refiner or power transmission elements, Linear movements of machinery parts, Inadequate design of workplaces, means of access, catwalks, passageways, fall-off protection, malfunction in the control system and so on. Therefore, there is a need for safety requirements while manufacturing and installing machines.
BS EN 1034 series specifies safety requirements for the design and construction of paper making and finishing machines. BS EN 1034-8 focuses on safety requirements for refining plants.
BS EN 1034-8 applies to low consistency refining plants, i.e., plants working with suspensions of fibres of virgin pulp, mechanical wood pulp or deinking pulp in water with a consistency up to approximately 6 %, used in the paper making process and applies together with BS EN 1034-1.
BS EN 1034-8 deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations and hazard events relevant to refining plants, when they are used as intended and under the conditions foreseen by the manufacturers.
Note 1: BS EN 1034-8 is not applicable to machines which are manufactured before the date of publication of this document by CEN.
Note 2: BS EN 1034-8 does not apply to beaters.
Who is BS EN 1034-8 - Safety in paper refining plants for?
BS EN 1034-8 on safety in paper refining plants is useful for:
- The paper and pulp industry
- Manufacturers of paper making and finishing machines
- Machinery designers/manufacturers
- Organizations that design, build and maintain paper machines/refining plants
- Mechanical engineers
- Quality control professionals
- Inspection bodies
- Health and safety bodies (regulators, accident prevention organizations, market surveillance, etc.)
- Machine service providers e.g., for maintenance
Why should you use BS EN 1034-8 - Safety in paper refining plants?
Safeguards are essential to protect workers from injury. Improper handling of paper machines can have a number of consequences, including, death, disfigurement, chemical burns, musculoskeletal injuries and disorders related to overexertion strain. BS EN 1034-8 provides you with all necessary safety requirements and measures for paper machineries. You need to comply with the safety requirements and measures for safe use of paper machines.
BS EN 1034-8 guides you with equipment and measures for maintenance and cleaning the refining plants. Where operations are carried out on cleaning and inspection openings of refiners and piping which are pressurized or where there is a risk of stock overheating in case of congestion, facilities to prevent unexpected discharge of stock.
When carrying out the risk assessment, the machine designer must check whether the list of hazards in BS EN 1034-8 is complete and applicable with respect to his machines. BS EN 1034-8 guidelines help you to ensure safety and protection from hazardous situations when using paper making and finishing machines refining plants.
