What is BS EN IEC 62046-Requirements for the application of protective equipment about?

BS EN IEC 62046 discusses the safety of machinery. BS EN IEC 62046 is a European standard that provides the requirements for the application of protective equipment for minimizing the risk from hazardous parts of machinery.

BS EN IEC 62046 specifies requirements for the selection, positioning, configuration, and commissioning of protective equipment to detect the momentary or continued presence of persons to protect those persons from dangerous part(s) of machinery in industrial applications.

BS EN IEC 62046 covers the application of electro-sensitive protective equipment (ESPE) specified in IEC 61496 (all parts) and pressure-sensitive mats and floors specified in ISO 13856-1

BS EN IEC 62046 considers the characteristics of the machinery, the protective equipment, the environment, and human interaction by persons of 14 years and older.

Who is BS EN IEC 62046-Requirements for the application of protective equipment for?

BS EN IEC 62046 on the requirements for the application of protective equipment is useful for:

  • Industrial machinery manufacturers
  • Industrial machinery designers
  • Machine safety certification organizations
  • Occupational health and safety departments
  • Risk assessment authorities

Why should you use BS EN IEC 62046-Requirements for the application of protective equipment

Personal protective equipment, commonly referred to as "PPE", is equipment worn to minimize exposure to hazards that cause serious workplace injuries. Electro-sensitive protective equipment assembly of devices and/or components working together for protective tripping or presence sensing purposes.

BS EN IEC 62046 provides you with the selection of protective measures, procedures, machine characteristics, environmental characteristics, protective equipment characteristics, application requirements, the performance of protective equipment, particular application requirements for specific protective equipment, and much more.

The requirements and procedures provided by BS EN IEC 62046 assist in improving the performance of protective equipment and ensure protection to workers from workplace injuries from parts of machinery.

BS EN IEC 62046 provides informative annexes which contain examples as representative solutions to illustrate some of the concepts of integration of protective equipment.

With compliance and obedience to BS EN IEC 62046, you can enhance the efficacy of the protective equipment and help improve the product’s standard and quality.

What is changed since the last update?

BS EN IEC 62046:2018 supersedes IEC TS 62046:200, which is withdrawn. BS EN IEC 62046:2018 has made some technical changes compared to the previous edition IEC TS 62046:200. These include:

  • Additional annexes relating to muting and vision systems
  • Muting and blanking requirements have been updated
  • Addition of IEC 61496 series types and capping the safety integrity level according to IEC 62061 and performance levels according to ISO 13849-1
