What is BS EN 16340 CPSD for burners and appliances burning gaseous or liquid fuels about?

BS EN 16340 is a European Standard that discusses safety and control devices for burners and appliances burning gaseous or liquid fuels.

BS EN 16340 specifies the safety, construction, and performance requirements for combustion product sensing devices intended to be used in combustion control systems hereinafter referred to as CPSD.

BS EN 16340 applies to sense devices for the measurement of combustion products from burners and appliances for domestic, commercial, and industrial use burning:

  • Gaseous fuels according to EN 437
  • Liquid fuels having a viscosity at the burner inlet of 1,6 mm2/s (cSt) up to 6 mm2/s (cSt) at 20 °C, higher boiling petroleum based first raffinates (viscosity greater than 6 mm2/s), that require preheating for proper atomization

BS EN 16340 applies to all types of stationary sensing devices measuring flue gas components

O2, CO, CO2, H2, CxHy, NOX, SO2 or for a combination of them (multiple gasses). BS EN 16340 applies also to sensing devices for extractive systems.

Note: BS EN 16340 does not cover sensor requirements for combustible gas, combustible gas mixture, and oil quality.

Who is BS EN 16340 - CPSD for burners and appliances burning gaseous or liquid fuels for?

BS EN 16340 on CPSD for burners and appliances is useful for:

  • Manufacturers of burners and appliances
  • Manufacturers of CPSD
  • Mechanical engineers
  • Product design engineers
  • Quality control personnel
  • Chemical plants and refineries
  • Industries including but not limited to automotive, aerospace, pharmaceutical etc

Why should you use BS EN 16340 - CPSD for burners and appliances burning gaseous or liquid fuels?

A combustion product sensing device combined with a control unit and a signal conditioner is used to measure the combustion performance of the burners.

The guidance in BS EN 16340 focuses on the safety, construction, and performance requirements for combustion product sensing devices used in combustion products. It provides you guidance on the classification of controls, units of measurement and test conditions, construction requirements, and performance and durability requirements for CPSD.

If you are a manufacturer, complying with BS EN 16340 requirements can ensure your CPSD are fit for purpose.  As a result, risks and hazards arising from inefficient detection capabilities can be minimized.
