What is ISO 815-2 - Rubber, vulcanized or thermoplastic about ?

ISO 815-2 is the second part of the multi-series standard that specifies two methods for the determination of the compression set characteristics of vulcanized and thermoplastic rubbers at low temperatures.

ISO 815-2 specifies methods used for testing the device, allowing to measure and record the test piece thickness during recovery. Due to the load applied during recovery in method 2, no correlation can be established between the results given by both methods.

Note: When rubber is held under compression, physical or chemical changes that prevent the rubber from returning to its original dimensions after the release of the deforming force can occur. The result is a set, where the magnitude of which depends on the time and temperature of compression as well as on the time, temperature, and conditions of recovery. At low temperatures, changes resulting from the effects of glass hardening or crystallization become predominant and, since these effects are reversed by raising the temperature, therefore, the measurements are always taken at the test temperature.

Who is ISO 815-2 - Rubber, vulcanized or thermoplastic for ?

ISO 815-2 on rubbers or thermoplastics is relevant to:

  • Manufacturers of rubbers and thermoplastics
  • Chemical engineers
  • Any entity responsible for testing and quality of rubber and thermoplastics

Why should you use ISO 815-2 - Rubber, vulcanized or thermoplastic ?

Thermoplastic rubber is a relatively new class of polymer, which combines the solubility and thermoplasticity of polystyrene with the toughness and resilience of vulcanized natural rubber or polybutadiene at ambient temperatures.

In ISO 815-2, a calibration schedule is given that contains all of the parameters and requirements stated in the test method. A parameter and requirement may relate to the main test apparatus, to a part of the apparatus, or an accessory apparatus.

Overall, ISO 815-2 is a comprehensive guide to provide methods for determining the compression set at low temperatures, so users will gain a comprehensive understanding of the quality of thermoplastics and rubbers to improve durability and strength.

What’s changed since the last update ?

BS ISO 815-2:2019 supersedes BS ISO 815-2:2014, which is withdrawn and includes

  • Normative references have been updated in Clause 2
  • A new precision statement has been added in Annex B
