What is ISO 36 about?  

ISO 36 is an international standard for vulcanized or thermoplastic rubber. ISO 36 specifies the test method that helps to separate two plies of fabric bonded with rubber. 

ISO 36 specifies a method of test for measuring the force required to separate, by stripping, two plies of fabric bonded with rubber, or a rubber layer and a fabric ply bonded together. 

Note 1: The method is applicable when the ply surfaces are approximately plane or when they are in the form of a cylinder having an internal diameter greater than approximately 50 mm. 

Note 2: The method is not applicable when the ply surfaces contain sharp bends, angles or other gross irregularities which cannot be excluded when cutting out test pieces. 

Note 3: ISO 36 does not apply to coated fabrics, which are tested in accordance with ISO 2411, or textile conveyor belts, which are tested in accordance with ISO 252

Why should you use ISO 36? 

Vulcanization is a chemical process in which the rubber is heated with sulphur. This process helps in the formation of a cross-link between long rubber molecules. A low level of thermoplastic rubber is useful in adding to other rubber adhesives.   

ISO 36 is helpful in fitting the machine with grips that are capable to hold the test piece and the ply which is separated without slipping during the test. The time interval between vulcanizing and testing is observed for the technical process. ISO 36 is useful in determining the failures and separation this can help you in reducing the defects in vulcanized rubber.  

ISO 36 specifies the test procedures, apparatus and conditions that help in performing the test. This test method is useful in measuring the stripping force which helps in separating two plies of fabric bonded with vulcanized rubber or a rubber layer and a fabric ply bonded together. 

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS ISO 36:2020 supersedes BS ISO 36:2017. BS ISO 36:2020 includes some technical changes with respect to BS ISO 36:2017. The main change compared to the previous edition is that another method, using film, has been added to prepare test pieces (7.2).
