What is ISO 4674-2 about?  

ISO 4674-2 is a series on rubbers. Rubber also called India rubber, latex, Amazonian rubber, caucho, or caoutchouc, as initially produced, consists of polymers of the organic compound isoprene, with minor impurities of other organic compounds. ISO 4674-2 specifies a method for the determination of tear resistance based on the action of an active force applied to a notched test piece.  

The test can be carried out on:  

  • Test pieces that have been conditioned in a standard atmosphere 
  • Test pieces that have undergone pre-treatment, e.g., water immersion 

Who is ISO 4674-2 for?

Why should you use ISO 4674-2?  

Rubber is used extensively in many applications and products, either alone or in combination with other materials. Tearing is amongst the more usual ways of destruction for many thin materials such as paper, coated or uncoated textiles, plastics films, and leather. Therefore, knowledge of the resistance of these materials to this type of behaviour is important. ISO 4674-2 describes a dynamic method using the kinetic energy of a falling pendulum. Other methods, e.g., the “wounded burst test,” are under consideration as possible further parts.  

GREATER STRENGTH EQUALS GREATER SAFETY. It is that simple. The stronger the fabric on your outer tent is, the less likely it is to tear because of harsh weather, rough handling, or inadvertent mistakes. So, for the safety of the product, the product must have the best strength for the use of the rubber. Greater strength gives the best safety, and the best safety will improve the quality and goodwill of the company. Using ISO 4674-2 you can specify a method for determining tear resistance based on the action of an active force applied to a notched test piece. 

What is changed since the last update?  

BS EN ISO 4674-2:2021 supersedes ISO 4674-2:1998. BS EN ISO 4674-2:2021 includes some technical changes concerning ISO 4674-2:1998. These include: 

  • In Apparatus and reagents, the title has been changed to “Apparatus and reagents” and Equipment, wetting agent or surfactant, and distilled or deionized water has been added 
  • The title has been changed to “Sampling and preparation of test pieces” 
  • The test duration has been specified 
  • The title has been changed to “Atmosphere for conditioning and testing”
