What is ISO 3387 about?  

ISO 3387 is an international standard for rubber that specifies the test methods which is useful in performing the test and helps in increasing the hardness of rubber at a specific temperature.   

ISO 3387 specifies a test based on hardness measurements for determining the progressive stiffening of rubber with time, caused by crystallization. It is limited to materials having an initial hardness at a test temperature of from 10 IRHD to 85 IRHD. 

Note 1: The method is applicable on raw, unvulcanised (compounded) and vulcanized rubber. It is mainly of interest for rubber with a marked crystallization tendency at temperatures experienced in cold climates, such as chloroprene and natural rubber. 

Note 2: The method is not applicable to fast-crystallizing materials which crystallize to a considerable degree within the timespan of 15 min used for conditioning at the test temperature.

Why should you use ISO 3387?  

The vulcanized rubber is useful in obtaining the thickness by imposing the two-piece rubber. The raw, unvulcanised (compounded) rubber helps in placing a suitable quantity in a preheated mould and then applying heat and pressure for a suitable time on the rubber. 

ISO 3387 will help you in avoiding additional friction by using the hardness gauges. The temperature and duration of the test mentioned in ISO 3387 are useful for carrying out the tests at a particular temperature.  

ISO 3387 can be your best guide as it specifies the test methods and procedure which is helpful in conducting the tests. This test method ensures the hardness of rubber is increased after a particular storage time and time is required for the specified increase in hardness. This is done by measuring the hardness of the test piece stored at the desired temperature.  

What’s changed since the last update?  

BS ISO 3387:2020 supersedes BS ISO 3387:2012. BS ISO 3387:2020 includes some technical changes with respect to BS ISO 3387:2012. These include:
