What is BS EN IEC 600343 about? 

BS EN IEC 600343 is a series in European standards that discusses rotating electrical machines.  

BS EN IEC 600343 applies to large three-phase synchronous generators, having rated outputs of 10 MVA and above driven by steam turbines or combustion gas turbines. 

BS EN IEC 600343 requirements apply to a synchronous generator driven by both a steam turbine and a combustion gas turbine as part of a single shaft combined-cycle unit. 

Note 1: BS EN IEC 600343 requirements do not apply to synchronous generators driven by water (hydraulic) turbines or wind turbines.

Why should you use BS EN IEC 600343? 

Rotating electrical machines consists of rotor, stator and air gap between them. Stator and rotor consist of windings, in which rotor is installed in the stem and that stem connects to the motor and any other loads. 

A synchronous generator is a large synchronous machine driven by steam or gas turbines that converts mechanical energy into electrical energy and supplies it to an electrical grid. 

The synchronous compensator is a large synchronous machine that is electrically coupled to the grid but does not exchange mechanical energy through the shaft during steady-state operation. 

BS EN IEC 600343 provides specifications about the temperature of primary coolant for air cooed generators or compensators. This allows you to monitor the temperature of the stator winding, which helps in manufacturing the rotating electrical machines in a secure manner. 

BS EN IEC 600343 helps you with the necessary precautions to be taken when using hydrogen cooled generators including rotating exciters driven by synchronous generators, auxiliary equipment needed for operating the generators, parts of the building where hydrogen might accumulate.

BS EN IEC 600343:2020 supersedes BS EN 600343:2008, which is withdrawn. It includes: 

  • Title modified and scope extended to synchronous compensators 
  • Rotor overcurrent requirements were added and synchronisation requirements added 
  • Impact of stator harmonics on rotor unbalanced load capability introduced 
  • Adjustments of temperatures or temperature rise revised for gas turbine applications 
  • Requirements for auxiliaries updated
