What is BS EN IEC 60034-23Rotating electrical machines about?

BS EN IEC 60034-23 is the 23rd part of the IEC 60034 series standard that focuses on rotating electrical machines.

BS EN IEC 60034-23 covers the procedures necessary to ensure satisfactory repair, overhaul, and reclamation of all types and sizes of rotating electrical machines covered by the IEC 60034 series.

BS EN IEC 60034-23 creates a generic industry procedure covering common aspects of a complete repair. It gives general requirements for repair, inspection, tests and evaluation, stator and rotor winding tests, final tests for equipment along with additional requirements for DC machines, and for high voltage A.C. machines & generators.

Note: BS EN IEC 60034-23 does not include re-designs and performance changes requiring machine designer input.

Who is BS EN IEC 60034-23Rotating electrical machines for?

BS EN IEC 60034-23 on electrical rotating machines is useful for:

  • Manufacturers of electrical rotating machines such as AC generators, DC generators
  • Manufacturers of electrical rotating machines such as synchronous motors, synchronous condensers
  • Service providers for electrical rotating machines

Why should you use BS EN IEC 60034-23‒Rotating electrical machines

BS EN IEC 60034-23 comes up with a scope of work that helps the service/ maintenance providers to maintain the working of electrical rotating machines, by allowing them to determine the cause of failure, determine the extent of repair, define revised performance, operating, and ambient conditions.

BS EN IEC 60034-23 makes provisions for the manufacturers for reviewing the original design and upgrading the specification of the design. It helps them to improve the quality and performance of the repaired machine. It also helps them in maintaining, or improving the rated energy efficiency, and most importantly ensuring that the environmental considerations are taken into account.

BS EN IEC 60034-23 on rotating electrical machines comes in very handy for its users, as it helps them to repair the machines on-site, at the service facility works, or elsewhere, in accordance with the needs of the user and local facilities. It enables the service providers/installers to deal with specific requirements for various machine types.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN IEC 60034-23:2019 supersedes BS EN IEC 60034-23:2003, which is withdrawn. The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:

  • The title of the standard has been changed
  • Clause 1 Scope, clause 4 general principles, clause 5 general: scope of work, health and safety, standards, quality, information required, and documentation now covered
  • Original Annexes B and C incorporated into the standard; new Annex B standard tolerances added
  • Clause 9 final tests updated, clause 10 additional requirements for the repair and testing of DC machines added
  • Clause 11 additional requirements for the repair and testing of High Voltage AC machines added, clause 12 customer reports and handover added
