What is ISO 14229-3 - UDS on CAN implementation in road vehicles about?  

Diagnostic systems are developed so that the product development teams, software/hardware testing teams and after-sales teams can detect faults in a vehicle by connecting their diagnostic tester tools to the electronic control units (ECUs) in the vehicle. 

ISO 14229 is an International Standard on UDS of road vehicles. The main aim of the ISO 14229 series is to provide safety by enabling diagnostics, firmware updates, routine testing and more in road vehicles. 

ISO 14229-3 is the third part of the ISO 14229 series that specifies the implementation of a common set of unified diagnostic services (UDS) on controller area networks (CAN) in road vehicles (UDSonCAN). 

UDSonCAN references ISO 14229-1 and ISO 14229-2 and specifies implementation requirements of the diagnostic services to be used for diagnostic communication over CAN. 

Note 1: UDSonCAN does not specify any requirement for the in-vehicle CAN bus architecture. 

Note 2: ISO 14229-3 does not include any redundant information of the documents as listed in the Introduction. It focuses on 

  • Additional requirements specific to the implementation of UDS on the CAN network, and 
  • Specific restrictions in the implementation of UDS on the CAN network
