What is BS EN 17003 about?
A road vehicle's ability to brake effectively and efficiently is critical to the safe operation of the vehicle on roads. A roller brake tester is a method of allowing the assessment of the braking system of a vehicle, whilst the vehicle itself is in a static condition.
They play a vital role in testing the brake functionality of vehicles and so need to be safe for use themselves.
BS EN 17003 specifies safety requirements for roller brake testers for road vehicles of more than 3,4 tons GVW. This safety standard applies to roller brake testers (brake test benches) that are designed for roadworthiness tests on categories M2, M3, N2, N3, O3, and O4 vehicles (as defined in Regulation (EU) 2018/858) and that might be also used to test M1, N1 categories.
Notes-
- BS EN 17003 doesn’t cover mobile roller or plate brake testers.
- BS EN 17003 covers fixed-bed roller brake testers with or without inspection pits and whose chassis are inside or outside the building.
- BS EN 17003 isn’t applicable to roller brake testers manufactured before the date of its publication.
