What is ISO 11992‑3 about?
ISO 11992‑3 is part three of a multi-series standard that specifies the application layer, the payload of messages, and parameter groups for equipment other than brakes and running gears, to ensure the interchange of digital information between road vehicles with a maximum authorized total mass greater than 3 500 kg and their towed vehicles, including communication between towed vehicles.
ISO 11992‑3 supports the parameters and message sets for object detection (OD). The installation of the object detection (OD) device compliant to this document in the towed vehicle is identified by a dedicated message.
NOTE-
The conformance and interoperability test plans are not part of ISO 11992‑3.

Why should you use ISO 11992‑3?
Towing a vehicle communication is very important. ISO 11992‑3 provides an application layer for equipment for the Interchange of digital information on electrical connections between towing and towed vehicles. This will help you establish better communication between the vehicles.
ISO 11992‑3 provides the application layer that provides a string of information that is assimilated into a protocol data unit (PDU). The PDU provides a framework for organizing the information. The information is useful for you to make the towing process efficient.
ISO 11992‑3 helps you avoid objects as it specifies guidelines regarding the message to be displayed when an object is detected near the vehicle. The towed vehicle provides information regarding its geometry and the coverage of the observed area.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS ISO 11992‑3:2021 is the third edition that cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 11992-3:2003), which has been technically revised. It also incorporates the Amendment ISO 11992-3:2003/Amd. 1:2008.
The main changes compared to the previous edition are as follows:
- Introduced requirement’s structure
- Clause 7: added new parameters
- Clause 8: added new messages
- Added annex a (informative) object detection (od) sensor states; and
- Added annex b (informative) message flow
