What is ISO 27145-4 - World-Wide Harmonized On-Board Diagnostics about?

ISO 27145 is a series of international standards on road vehicles that discusses the requirement for connection between the vehicle and test equipment. ISO 27145-4 is the fourth part of a series of documents on road vehicles. ISO 27145-4 defines the requirements to successfully establish, maintain, and terminate communication with a vehicle that implements the requirements of the WWH-OBD GTR (Global technical regulation No. 5; see Reference [16]). This requires a plug and play communication capabilities for the vehicle, as well as for any test equipment that intends to establish communication with a vehicle.

ISO 27145-4 details all the OSI layer requirements to achieve this goal.

ISO 27145-4 is intended to become the single communication standard for access to information relating to vehicle on-board diagnostics (VOBD). To allow for a smooth migration from the existing communication standards to this future worldwide standardized communication standard, the communication concept as specified in this part of ISO 27145 is based on two different data links:

  • Diagnostic communication over Controller Area Network (DoCAN), ISO 15765-4
  • Diagnostic communication over Internet Protocol (DoIP), ISO 13400 (all parts)

NOTE: It is intended that ISO 27145-4 will be extended as necessary upon the introduction of additional communication media.

Who is ISO 27145-4 - World-Wide Harmonized On-Board Diagnostics for?

ISO 27145-4 on World-Wide Harmonized On-Board Diagnostics is relevant to:

  • Automotive industry

Why should you use ISO 27145-4 - World-Wide Harmonized On-Board Diagnostics?

WWH-OBD is an acronym for World Wide Harmonized On Board-Diagnostics. WWH-OBD is a name for an international standard for the worldwide harmonization of vehicle diagnostics and is used to monitor the emissions output of passenger- and commercial vehicles

ISO 27145-4 provide guidance on vehicle and external test equipment connection requirements, wired CAN connection based on ISO 15765-4, Wired Ethernet connection based on ISO 13400,

As a user of ISO 27145-4, you can be ensured of test equipment that intends to establish communication with a vehicle. With obedience and compliance to ISO 27145-4, you can successfully establish, maintain, and terminate communication with a vehicle that implements the requirements of the WWH-OBD. ISO 27145-4 helps you to monitor the emissions output of vehicles. With ISO 27145-4 you can be ensured of all requirements of World-Wide Harmonized On-Board Diagnostics.
