What is ISO/TR 219591 about?  

ISO/TR 21959 is a series of international standards on automatic road vehicles to check human performance while automated driving.  

ISO/TR 219591 is the first part of the ISO/TR 21959 series of documents that is applicable to automated driving of road vehicles and driver performance which help the user get knowledge of and attitudes toward driving automation systems. 

ISO/TR 219591 introduces basic common underlying concepts related to driver performance and state in the context of automated driving. The concepts are applicable to all levels of automated driving functions that require a human/driver to be engaged or fallback ready. ISO/TR 219591 can also be used with levels that enable a driver to resume manual control of the vehicle. 

NOTE: ISO/TR 219591 can be applicable for human factors assessment/evaluations using driving simulators tests on restricted roadways (e.g., test tracks), or tests on public roads. The information applies to all vehicle categories.

Driver readiness and availability are defined during automated driving that influences successive driver’s intervention performance to regain control of the vehicle from the system to continue driving manually, avoid a hazard or bring the vehicle to the minimum risk condition. 

Furthermore, ISO/TR 21959-1 allows you to comprehend the idea of human performance while driving an automated vehicle, allowing users to think about how the automated vehicle behaves and enables its operating mode awareness. 

What’s changed since the last update?  

PD ISO/TR 219591:2020 supersedes PD ISO/TR 219591:2018. PD ISO/TR 219591:2020 includes some technical changes with respect to PD ISO/TR 219591:2018. These include: 

  • Editorial modifications to the format of the figures 
  • Corrections of the references to clause numbers 
  • Corrections to redundant descriptions.
