What is BS EN 1871 about?

BS EN 1871 is a European standard that discusses road marking materials and their performance under various tests.

BS EN 1871 covers testing of physical properties of road marking materials by laboratory methods.

The products covered and specified by BS EN 1871 are white and yellow paint, thermoplastic and cold plastic materials, with or without premix glass beads, to be used for permanent and/or temporary road markings on highways and other areas used by vehicular traffic.

Other products and colours intended for road markings are not covered in BS EN 1871.

Note: Not all physical properties listed in BS EN 1871 have to be specified.

Who is BS EN 1871 for?

BS EN 1871 on road marking materials is useful for:

  • Manufacturers and suppliers of road marking materials
  • Manufacturers and suppliers of paint, thermoplastic and cold plastic materials
  • Civil engineers
  • Contractors
  • Road safety and management authorities

Why should you use BS EN 1871?

Road marking materials are largely assessed using road trials. However, laboratory methods help differentiate the quality of road marking materials in a faster and easier manner.

BS EN 1871 help assess the physical properties of paint, thermoplastic and cold plastic materials, which can effectively evaluate the performance of these materials under various conditions. Test methods to assess luminance factor, hiding power, UV ageing, bleed resistance, softening point, alkali resistance, and cold impact resistance are provided in BS EN 1871

If you are a manufacturer of road marking materials, you will be able to determine the right materials for your product that can ultimately provide long service-life. The test methods described in BS EN 1871 are intended to assist in the selection of a road marking material that may be applied directly to alkaline reactive substrates (hydraulic concrete pavements).

With best industry guidance on these materials, reflective road markings can assist road users even in bad weather or other low-light situations. It also aids in improving awareness of approaching dangerous places and instructs drivers to maintain correct speed management.
