What is BS EN 536- Safety requirements for mixing plants about?

BS EN 536 is a standard that serves technical specifications for Safety requirements for mixing plants, enabling operational stability, safety, and performance in road construction applications.

BS EN 536 specifies the safety requirements applicable to stationary and relocatable mixing plants to produce materials (e.g., hot-mix asphalt, cold-mix asphalt, cement gravel) used for the construction and maintenance of traffic routes (roads, highways, sidewalks, airfields, etc.) water retaining works, dam walls, culverts, etc.

BS EN 536 applies to the following types of mixing plants:

  • Hot asphalt mixing plant
  • Cold mixing plant (e.g., for production of cement gravel, cold mix asphalt)
  • Mixing plant for bituminous or non-bituminous reclaimed materials
  • Mixing plant for mastic asphalt, also including natural asphalt

BS EN 536 deals with all significant hazards pertinent to mixing plants, when they are used as intended and under the conditions of misuse which are foreseen by the manufacturer (see Clause 4).

Note: BS EN 536 does not cover:

  • Machines moving during the working process (e.g., mobile mastic asphalt mixers) and crushers
  • Machines to produce cement concrete and mortar as covered in EN 12151
  • Hazards caused by flammable gases
  • Mixing plants manufactured before the date of its publication

Who is BS EN 536- Safety requirements for mixing plants for?

BS EN 536 on Safety requirements for mixing plants applies to:

  • Manufacturers of road surface treatment machines
  • Dealers and importers of road surface treatment machines
  • Contractors, construction, and civil engineers
  • Road maintenance authorities
  • Safety inspection services

Why should you use BS EN 536- Safety requirements for mixing plants?

Mixing plants are complex installation of machines that are functionally connected and perform a combination of functions that depends on the type of the plant. They assist in functions such as storage and charging of aggregates and reclaimed materials, dosing of aggregates and reclaimed materials and scalping of cold aggregates and reclaimed materials and more.

BS EN 536 provides users guidance on safety requirements, including means of access, guards, electrical installation, pneumatic, hydraulic, piping, hot parts, control station, materials sampling, and restricted areas, enabling the development of safety mechanisms and protocols. BS EN 536 also provides users guidance on verification of safety requirements, information for use, and marking of mixing plants for road construction materials, enabling users to deliver accurate information to the end-users.

With obedience and compliance of BS EN 536 users can develop and assess mixing plants, ensuring their safety, operability, and longevity in road construction materials.
