What is PD IEC TS 62257-7-4- Hybrid power systems about?

PD IEC TS 62257 is an international standard that discusses renewable energy and hybrid systems for rural electrification. The IEC 62257 series intends to provide different players involved in rural electrification projects (such as project implementers, project contractors, project supervisors, installers, product suppliers, etc.) documents for setting up renewable energy and hybrid systems with a.c. voltage below 1 000 V and d.c. voltage below 1 500 V.

PD IEC TS 62257-7-4 is a technical specification, that specifies the design and implementation of hybrid off-grid solar systems, where solar energy provides energy to a load in conjunction with other sources of energy. These systems may or may not include an energy storage system.

PD IEC TS 62257-7-4 is applicable to single-phase and three-phase applications, and it covers situations where the grid is available as an additional source of power for charging batteries and maintaining system reliability.

Note: PD IEC TS 62257-7-4 does not cover situations in which energy is fed back into a utility grid, although such systems may incidentally possess this function.

Who is PD IEC TS 62257-7-4- Hybrid power systems for?

PD IEC TS 62257-7-4 on solar energy hybrid power systems is applicable to:

  • Market support programmes that support the off-grid lighting market with financing, consumer education, awareness, and other services
  • Manufacturers and distributors that need to verify the quality and performance of off-grid renewable energy product
  • Bulk procurement programmes that facilitate or place large orders of products
  • Trade regulators such as government policymakers and officials who craft and implement trade and tax policy
  • Renewable energy organizations and institutions

Why should you use PD IEC TS 62257-7-4- Hybrid power systems?

Photovoltaic hybrid power systems are gaining attraction among rural electrification institutions as a way to reduce fuel price rises, produce lower operating costs, and provide improved service quality than traditional single-source generating systems. A combination of technologies opens up intriguing possibilities for overcoming technological limits.

There are several system architectures and applications, as well as numerous ways to combine solar energy sources. PD IEC TS 62257-7-4 distinguishes between several types of solar hybrid system applications and provides recommendations on their design and integration.

Adopting PD IEC TS 62257-7-4-compliant guidelines can enable efficient integration of solar with other forms of power generation thus optimizing renewable energy generation and systems for rural electrification. As a result of the integration, you can ensure that your power generation systems offer high performance, operational efficiency, reduced failures and disruptions and cost effectiveness.
