What is ISO 6798-2 about?
ISO 6798-2 specifies the survey method, which is the measurement method of the sound power level for reciprocating internal combustion engines.
ISO 6798-2 applies to all reciprocating internal combustion engines falling within the field of application of ISO 3046-1 and other internal combustion engines where no suitable International Standard exists.
Note: In this document, reciprocating internal combustion engines are referred to as engines unless otherwise explained.

Why should you use ISO 6798-2?
In combustion engines, fuel and oxidizer (usually air or oxygen) react and come to combustion state.
ISO 6798-2 provides a survey method for determining the sound power level (A-weighted) of the noise source from sound pressure levels measured on a measurement surface enveloping the noise source over a reflecting plane.
ISO 6798-2 provides two types of measurement methods to measure sound power level. The first type of method gives the A-weighted and frequency-band sound power level determinations, the second type gives grade 2 accuracies of the measurement.
The standard deviations provided in ISO 6798-2 reflect the comprehensive effect of the measurement uncertainty, but do not include the variations caused by installation and operation.
ISO 6798-2 provides manufacturers with survey method and calculation techniques that assist in ensuring the sound power level are maintained for reciprocating internal combustion engines, which aids the user by providing a better experience and reducing the noise generated by combustion engines.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 6798-2:2020 supersedes BS EN ISO 6798-2:1995. BS EN ISO 6798-2:2020 includes some technical changes concerning BS EN ISO 6798-2:1995. These include:
- The requirements of the test environment and the measurement uncertainty have been changed
- The calculation of background noise correction has been changed from table method to formula method
- The requirements of installation of engine and auxiliaries have been specified clearly
- The specification for measurement units has been added
- The criterion for position adequacy of the microphone has been added
- The criterion for acoustic adequacy of test environment has been improved
