What is ISO 81785 about? 

ISO 81785 is part 5 of a series of international standards that specifies fuels whose use is recommended for performing the exhaust emission test cycles. 

ISO 81785 is applicable to reciprocating internal combustion engines for mobile, transportable and stationary installations excluding engines for vehicles primarily designed for road use. 

ISO 81785 is applicable to engines used, e.g., earth-moving machines and generating sets, and for other applications.

Why should you use ISO 81785? 

Reciprocating internal combustion engines is a device which converts chemical energy which is contained in a hydrocarbon into mechanical energy and also converts into the thermal energy of the waste gases that escape into the atmosphere. 

ISO 81785 provides various types of fuel properties such as carbon residue, crude oil, diesel fuel, liquefies petroleum gas (LPG), natural gas, methane. In case where it is necessary to run the engine with crude oil, the properties of the fuel, including the elemental analysis, will get measured and reported with the results of the emission measurement.

What’s changed since the last update? 

BS ISO 81785:2021 supersedes BS ISO 81785:2015, which is withdrawn. 

BS ISO 81785:2021 includes some technical changes with respect to BS ISO 81785:2015. These are: 

  • The addition of reference fuels from EU Regulation 2017/654 exhaust emission requirements for internal combustion engines in non-road mobile machinery 
  • The addition of California Air Resources Board (CARB) E10 emissions certification fuel 
  • The addition of US Environmental Protection Agency Tier 3 E10 emissions certification fuel 
  • Updates of fuel specifications from ISO 8217
