What is ISO 8178-1 about?
ISO 8178‑1 is the first part of European standard which specifies fuels whose use is recommended for performing the exhaust emission test cycles. ISO 8178-1 provides an engine’s emissions characteristics which through use of proper weighting factors and test cycles can be used as an indication of that engine’s emission levels under various applications and for different fuels.
ISO 8178‑1 applies to reciprocating internal combustion engines for mobile, transportable and stationary installations excluding engines for vehicles primarily designed for road use.
ISO 8178‑1 applies to engines used, e.g., earth-moving machines and generating sets, and for other applications.

Why should you use ISO 8178-1?
Reciprocating internal combustion engines is a device that converts chemical energy which is contained in a hydrocarbon into mechanical energy and also converts into the thermal energy of the waste gases that escape into the atmosphere.
ISO 8178-1 provides methods for determining one weighted value for each pollutant emitted by reciprocating internal combustion (RIC) engines on a testbed, based on the load and speed combinations.
ISO 8178-1 provides various types of exhaust emission methods to measure brake-specific emissions, and the determination of the mass of pollutants in the exhaust and the corresponding engine work.
As a user of ISO 8178‑1, the exhaust emission measurement is used in both references gaseous and particulate emission. Since fuel properties vary widely from country to country, a broad range of different emission measurements for different fuels are listed in this standard, which helps for reciprocating internal combustion engines in a standardized way.
What’s changed since the last update?
BS EN ISO 8178-1:2020 supersedes BS EN ISO 8178-1:2017. BS EN ISO 8178-1:2020 includes some technical changes concerning BS EN ISO 8178-1:2017. These include:
- Addition of a provision to use alternative systems for ammonia analysis
- Improvement of weighing chamber and analytical balance specifications
- Insertion of the general section on measurement instruments
- Revision of particle number measurement system requirements
- Addition concentration and expiration date for analytical gases
