What is ISO 8178-4 about?
ISO 8178-4 is the fourth part of European standard which steady-state and transient test cycles for different engine applications.
ISO 8178-4 is applicable to RIC engines for mobile, transportable and stationary use, excluding engines for on-road transport of passengers and goods, and can be applied to engines for non-road use, e.g. for earth-moving machines, generating sets, and for other applications. For engines used in machinery covered by additional requirements, additional test conditions and special evaluation methods can apply.
ISO 8178-4 specifies the test cycles, the test procedures, and the evaluation of gaseous and particulate exhaust emissions from reciprocating internal combustion (RIC) engines coupled to a dynamometer.

Why should you use ISO 8178-4?
Reciprocating internal combustion engines is a device that converts chemical energy, which is contained in a hydrocarbon, into mechanical energy and also converts into the thermal energy of the waste gases that escape into the atmosphere.
The objective of ISO 8178-4 is to rationalize the test procedures for non-road engines in order to simplify and make more cost-effective the drafting of legislation, the development of engine specifications, and the certification of engines to control gaseous and particulate emissions.
ISO 8178-4 specifies calculating the control area engine of the auxiliary power engine as well as determining its validity by exhaust restriction tests, fuel testing cycles, and transition state cycle calculations.
ISO 8178-4 is used for both Steady-state and transient tests since properties vary widely from country to country. A variety of engine applications are outlined in this standard, which allows manufacturers to standardize the tests for reciprocating internal combustion engines.

BS EN ISO 8178-4:2020 supersedes BS EN ISO 8178-4:2017. BS EN ISO 8178-4:2020 includes some technical changes concerning BS EN ISO 8178-4:2017. These include:

- Revision of particle number emission evaluation
- Addition of electrical equipment in the auxiliary table
