BS 5892 is a European standard that discusses rolling stock materials in railways. BS 5892-6 is the sixth part of a multi-part series that specifies requirements for the assembly of wheelsets.

BS 5892-6 includes requirements for the shrink fitting or press fitting of monobloc wheels, wheel centres, wheel centres complete with tyres, axle mounted brake discs, gearwheels or other components onto the axle. BS 5892-6 also includes requirements for fitting tyres onto wheel centres already mounted on the axle.

BS 5892-6 covers wheelsets of the following types:

  • Type of axle: outside or inside journal bearings, cylindrical wheel seats and plain axle body or with seats for gear wheels, brake discs, traction motor suspension bearing, etc.
  • Type of wheel: monobloc, rolled and forged; tyred with rolled tyres and forged/rolled wheel centres.
  • Type of axle box bearings: Plain or roller.
  • Type of traction motor bearings: Plain or roller

Note: BS 5892-6 does not apply for wheelset assembly where the axle has been designed following BS EN 13103 or BS EN 13104, the wheelset assembly for which is specified in BS EN 13260.
