What is BS EN 13848-2 about?

BS EN 13848-2 is the second part in the multi-series of European standards applicable to railway applications.

BS EN 13848-2 specifies the minimum requirements for track geometry measuring principles and track geometry measuring systems in order to produce comparable results when measuring the same track. It applies to all measuring systems, attended or unattended, fitted on any vehicle, except those systems defined in EN 13848-3 and EN 13848-4. Only systems put into service after the standard comes into force is concerned.

Note 1: BS EN 13848-2 does not define the requirements for vehicle acceptance.

Note 2: BS EN 13848-2 does not apply to measure systems dedicated to Urban Rail Systems.

Who is BS EN 13848-2 for?

BS EN 13848-2 on track geometry quality is relevant to:

  • Manufacturers and suppliers of track recording vehicles/cars
  • Manufacturers and suppliers of railway infrastructure equipment
  • Railway management authorities
  • Train operating companies (TOCs)
  • Inspection and testing department
  • Mechanical engineers

Why should you use BS EN 13848-2?

Track recording cars or track geometry cars are used to check the geometric parameters of the railway track. In this regard, when measuring a track, track geometry recording systems help produce consistent and comparable results, regardless of the measuring speed and direction of travel.

BS EN 13848-2 provides the minimal standards for track geometry measurement concepts and track geometry measuring systems in order to produce comparable findings when measuring the same track. This can assist you in measuring results, which can be used for track quality monitoring, maintenance planning, and can contribute to the process of safety assurance as it relates to track geometry. If the measuring hardware power supply fails, BS EN 13848-2 will assist you in preventing the track geometry measurement from being interrupted and loss of recorded data.

BS EN 13848-2 ensure the effective operation of both the measuring devices and the corresponding processing system. With the accurate measurements of parameters such as position, curve, alignment of track and smoothness, you can assure of safety and reliability of railway infrastructure.
