What is BS EN 157461 about?

BS EN 157461 is the first part in the multi-series of documents that is applicable to the road- railway applications on track for rail machines and associated equipment.

BS EN 157461deals with the technical requirements to minimize the specific railway hazards of self-propelled road-rail machines – henceforward referred to as machines – and associated equipment, which can arise during the commissioning, operation and maintenance of the machines when carried out in accordance with the specification given by the manufacturer or his authorized representative.

BS EN 157461 is also applicable for machines and associated equipment that in the working configuration are partly supported on the ballast or the formation. Such machines are capable of independent self-propelled movement on the ground.

Note1: BS EN 157461 does not apply to the following:

  •  The requirements for quality of the work or performance of the machine
  •  The specific requirements established by the machine operator for the use of machines, which will be the subject of negotiation between the manufacturer   and the infrastructure manager
  •  Moving and working while not on rails
  •  Separate machines temporarily mounted on machines and associated   equipment
  •  Demountable machines as defined in 3.2
  •  Trailers as defined in 3.3, including road-rail trailers.

Note2: BS EN 157461 does not establish the additional requirements for the following:

  •  Operation subject to special rules, e.g. potentially explosive atmospheres
  •  Hazards due to natural causes, e.g. earthquake, lightning, flooding
  •  Working methods
  •  Operation in severe working conditions requiring special measures, e.g. work in   tunnels or in cuttings, extreme environmental conditions such as freezing   temperatures, high temperatures, corrosive environments, tropical environments,   contaminating environments, strong magnetic fields
  •  Hazards due to errors in the software
  •  Hazards occur when used to handle suspended loads that may swing freely.

Note3: BS EN 157461 applies to all machines which are ordered one year after the publication date by CEN of this document.

Who is BS EN 157461 for?

BS EN 157461on road-rail machines and associated equipment is relevant to:

  •    Railway management authorities
  •    Train operating companies (TOC)s
  •    Infrastructure managers
  •    Site supervisors
  •    Inspection and testing department in railways
  •    Machine manufacturers and operators

Why should you use BS EN 157461?

The use of rail for the transportation of products, merchandise, and people is growing. As a result, the rail infrastructure wears out faster, necessitating more maintenance work, shorter repair intervals, and less track availability to carry out maintenance work.

In this regard, BS EN 15746-1 provides assistance and guidance of assemblies related to on and off tracking and/or the machine's working model. Furthermore, it provides you with adequate rail guidance to prevent damage to the rail or any linked part of the railway infrastructure. The machinery in question, as well as the extent to which dangers, hazardous circumstances, and hazardous occurrences are addressed BS EN 15746-1.

BS EN 15746-1 specifies the requirements that equipment must follow in order to be safe. The requirements outlined in BS EN 15746-1 are designed to provide the same level of confidence in safety against derailment on the operational track.
