What is BS EN 13481-5 - Fastening systems for slab track about ?

BS EN 13481-5 discuss fastening systems for slab track. BS EN 13481-5 is applicable to fastening systems in Categories A–D as specified in BS EN 13481-1:2012, for attaching rails to the uppermost surface of concrete or asphalt slabs and for embedded rails in non-ballasted tracks with maximum axle loads and minimum curve radii.

The requirements apply to:

  • Fastening systems that act on the foot and/or web of the rail including direct fastening systems and indirect fastening systems
  • Adhesive and mechanical fastening systems for embedded rail, but excluding rail cast into road pavements

BS EN 13481-5 is only applicable to fastening systems for rail sections in BS EN 13674-1 (excluding 49E4) or BS EN 13674-4.

Note1: BS EN 13481-5 is not applicable to fastening systems for other rail sections, rigid fastening systems, or special fastening systems used at bolted joints or glued joints.

Note2: BS EN 13481-5 should only be used for type approval of complete fastening systems.

Who is BS EN 13481-5 - Fastening systems for slab track for ?

BS EN 13481-5 on fastening systems for slab track is useful for:

  • Designer and producers of rail fastening systems
  • Railway management authorities
  • Infrastructure managers
  • Site supervisors
  • Inspection and testing department in railways
  • Train operator companies (TOCs)

Why should you use BS EN 13481-5 - Fastening systems for slab track

The fastening system is designed with controlled clip guidance from the parked to the in-service position. BS EN 13481-5 specifies performance requirements for slab tracks to provide better stability and durability for high-speed railways. BS EN 13481-5 helps to assess the sustainability of the design and maintenance of fastening systems for slab track with the rail on the surface or rail embedded in a channel.

What is changed since the last update ?

BS EN 13481-5:2012+A1:2017 supersedes BS EN 13481-5:2012 which is withdrawn.

BS EN 13481-5:2012+A1:2017 includes some technical changes with respect to BS EN 13481-5:2012. These include:

  • The scope has been extended to include fastening systems for embedded rail
  • New categories of fastening systems have been introduced
  • The ranges of test loads have been extended to cover the new categories of fastening systems
  • Advice on attenuation of noise and vibration has been added in a new annex (Annex A)
