What is BS EN 14363 - Railway applications testing about?

BS EN 14363 is a European standard on railway vehicles that describes the running behaviour of railway vehicles and methods to assess vehicle performance.

BS EN 14363 defines the process for assessment of the running characteristics of railway vehicles for the European network of standard gauge tracks (nominally 1 435 mm).

In addition to the assessment of the running characteristics of vehicles for acceptance processes, BS EN 14363 also defines quantities and dependencies that are not directly used for acceptance purposes.

The assessment of running characteristics applies to vehicles which:

  • Are newly developed
  • Have had relevant design modifications
  • Have changes in their operating conditions

EN 14363 addresses four aspects: vehicles, infrastructure, conditions of the wheel-rail interface, and operating conditions.

Who is BS EN 14363 - Railway applications testing for?

BS EN 14363 on railway vehicles is useful for:

  • Railway engineers
  • Mechanical and electrical engineers
  • Manufacturers of railway equipment

Why should you use BS EN 14363 - Railway applications testing

The running characteristics of a railway vehicle are essential for a safe and economic operation of a railway system

BS EN 14363 provides the different methods for the assessment of measuring uncertainty and fault modes of mechanical parts.

The assessment methods are described in BS EN 14363 to ensure that vehicles can run safely on twisted tracks.

The dynamic performance assessment methods applied to all new or modified vehicles are given to evaluate the running safety, the track loading and the ride characteristics of the vehicle.

Furthermore, BS EN 14363 assists you with railway vehicles' running behaviour to ensure safety and reliability when changes in design or operating conditions are done to quantify the vehicle's performance.
