What is BS EN 13802 - Hydraulic dampers for railways about?

BS EN 13802 is a European standard on suspension components that discusses hydraulic dampers used in railways to avoid hard impacts or excessive vibration amplitudes.

BS EN 13802 applies to hydraulic dampers and their end mountings used on rail vehicles.

The dampers covered in BS EN 13802 include:

Dampers that control the dynamic behaviour of a vehicle:

  • Suspension’s dampers, (e.g., primary vertical dampers, secondary vertical dampers, and secondary lateral dampers)
  • Yaw dampers
  • Roll dampers
  • Inter-vehicles dampers

And dampers that control the dynamic behaviour of mechanical systems:

  • Pantograph dampers
  • Motor dampers, etc

Note: All relevant terminology that is specific to the subject is defined in BS EN 13802

Who is BS EN 13802 - Hydraulic dampers for railways for?

BS EN 13802 on hydraulic dampers for railways is useful for:

  • Manufactures of hydraulic dampers
  • Test centres for hydraulic dampers
  • Regulatory authorities

Why should you use BS EN 13802 - Hydraulic dampers for railways?

Damper characteristic is the relationship (assuming that there is no force as a function of velocity phase shift) between damper force and damper velocity established at a damper displacement of large amplitude and low frequency to discount the dynamic influence of the damper structure and fluid stiffness. The damper is a hydraulic damper with end mountings.

BS EN 13802 guideline assists you with the method specifying the operational environment, technical requirements, operational environment requirements, climatic conditions, vibrational exposure, physical characteristics, fire resistance, whole-life environmental impact, overall dimensions, interface, functional requirements, dynamic characteristics and more for hydraulic dampers for railways.

BS EN 13802 provides test methods for compliance, machine, temperature, force as a function of displacement characteristic, force as a function of velocity characteristic, and priming for hydraulic dampers for railways.

BS EN 13802 also guides on production control, marking, packaging, and maintainability for hydraulic dampers for railways.

With compliance and obedience to BS EN 13802, you can standardise the quality and performance of hydraulic dampers to avoid hard impacts or excessive vibration amplitudes.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 13802:2013 supersedes EN 13802:2004, which is withdrawn. BS EN 13802:2013 has made some technical changes compared to EN 13802:2004. These include:

  • In Clause 1 the complete hydraulic dampers, with their end mountings, are now considered in the scope. This new consideration has been considered in the whole standard
  • In clause 2 The normative references have been updated
  • A new item concerning the life cycle of the dampers has been added
  • The value of Tao, min to take by default has been decreased
  • The value of Tae, min to take by default has been decreased
