What is BS EN 12663-1 - Locomotives and passenger rolling stock about?

BS EN 12663 is a European standard that discusses the structural requirements of railway vehicle bodies. BS EN 12663-1 is the first part of the series that outlines the minimum structural requirements for locomotives and passenger rolling stock to ensure safety and acceptable quality for railway vehicle bodies.

BS EN 12663-1 outlines the load’s vehicle bodies should be capable of sustaining, identifies how material data should be used, and presents the principles to be used for design validation by analysis and testing.

BS EN 12663-1 applies to locomotives and passenger rolling stock. BS EN 12663-1 also applies to all railway vehicles within the EU and EFTA territories. The specified requirements assume operating conditions and circumstances such as are prevalent in these countries.

In addition to the requirements of BS EN 12663-1, the structure of all vehicles associated with passenger conveyance may generally be required to have features that can protect occupants in the case of collision accidents. These requirements are given in EN 15227.

Who is BS EN 12663-1 - Locomotives and passenger rolling stock for?

BS EN 12663-1 on locomotives and passenger rolling stock (and alternative method for freight wagons) is useful for:

  • Locomotives and passenger rolling stock designers and manufacturers
  • Engineer and developer of locomotives and passenger rolling stock
  • Test centres
  • Regulatory authorities

Why should you use BS EN 12663-1 - Locomotives and passenger rolling stock?

The railway vehicle body is the main load-carrying structure above the suspension units including all components which are affixed to this structure and contribute directly to its strength, stiffness, and stability.

BS EN 12663-1 guideline assists you with the structural requirements on categories of railway vehicles, uncertainties in railway design parameters, demonstration of static strength, demonstration of structural stability, demonstration of stiffness, and demonstration of fatigue strength for locomotives and passenger rolling stock.

BS EN 12663-1 also provides design load cases, permissible stresses for materials, requirements of strength demonstration tests, and validation programmes for locomotives and passenger rolling stock.

This assists in building efficient and durable locomotives and passenger rolling stock for use in railways and also assists in enhancing their efficacy to ensure safety to operators.

With compliance and obedience to BS EN 12663-1, you can standardise the acceptable quality for locomotives and passenger rolling stock and improve the structural design of the vehicle body.
