What is BS EN 50155 - Electronic equipment on rolling stock about?

BS EN 50155 specifies the requirements for the design, the manufacturing, the documentation and testing of any electronic equipment installed on-board of rolling stock.

BS EN 50155 applies to all electronic equipment for control, regulation, protection, diagnostic, energy supply, etc. installed on rail vehicles and the hardware of all rolling stock electronic equipment or systems performing safety-related functions.

NOTE: BS EN 50155 covers the requirements for operating conditions, design, documentation, testing and integration of electronic equipment, as well as hardware and software requirements considered necessary for compliant and reliable equipment.

NOTE: Sensors (e.g. current, voltage, speed) and semiconductor drive units for power electronic devices are covered by BS EN 50155

NOTE: Specific requirements related to practices necessary to ensure defined safety integrity level or functional safety are not covered by BS EN 50155.

Who is BS EN 50155 - Electronic equipment on rolling stock for?

BS EN 50155 on electronic equipment in railway rolling stock is useful for:

  • Manufacturers and suppliers of electronic equipment
  • Railway undertaking
  • Train staff and operators
  • Mechanical engineers
  • Regulatory bodies

Why should you use BS EN 50155 - Electronic equipment on rolling stock

Rolling stock is used in the railroad industry to denote anything on rail wheels including locomotives, freight cars, flat cars, and other vehicles that use steel wheels on railroad tracks. BS EN 50155 gives you the information about the electronic equipment installed on-board of rolling stock.

BS EN 50155 provides requirement of equipment and its characteristics (e.g. functional, electrical, mechanical, appearance, interfaces) and gives the test methods on installations and performance criteria of equipment.

Adopting the guidance provided in BS EN 50155 will help ensure optimal operational efficiency and functional safety of overall railway applications, with high-quality quality management system that integrates system, hardware, and software design processes.
