What is BS EN 14531-1 about?

BS EN 14531 is a series of the European standard on railway vehicle braking systems describing brake equipment and braking performance for all types of train sets and single vehicles.

BS EN 14531-1 is the first part of the BS EN 14531 series of documents that describes general algorithms for the brake performance calculations to be used for all types of train sets, units, or single vehicles, including high speed, locomotive, and passenger coaches, conventional vehicles and wagons.

BS EN 14531-1 enables the estimation and/or comparison by calculation of the various aspects of the performance: stopping or slowing distances, dissipated energy, power, force calculations, and immobilization braking.

NOTE: BS EN 14531-1 does not specify the performance requirements.

Who is BS EN 14531-1 for?

BS EN 14531-1 on railway vehicle braking is useful for:

  • Railway engineers
  • Railway operators
  • Manufacturers of railway rolling stocks

Why should you use BS EN 14531-1?

Brake is an essential feature in order to retard and stop the railway vehicle within the minimum possible time.

BS EN 14531-1 provides directions regarding the stopping and slowing distances calculation procedure to establish the brake forces acting on the train.

BS EN 14531-1 navigates you through the calculation of the braking force generated by each brake equipment type related to the rail.

The general characteristics of immobilization brake are provided in BS EN 14531-1 which is used to prevent a stationary train from moving i.e. by the use of a holding or parking brake.

Overall, BS EN 14531-1 could assist you with the operation and calculations of railway vehicle braking systems in order to develop high efficiency and safety brake systems compatible with rail system vehicles, thereby enhancing the productivity of businesses operating in railway vehicles braking systems.
