What is BS EN 16771 - Aluminothermic welding of grooved rails about?

BS EN 16771 discusses about aluminothermic welding of grooved rails.

BS EN 16771 defines the laboratory tests and requirements for approval of an aluminothermic welding process using welds produced in workshop conditions.

In addition to the definitive requirements, BS EN 16771 also requires the items detailed in Clause 4 to be documented. For compliance with BS EN 16771, it is important that both the definitive requirements and the documented items be satisfied.

Note1: BS EN 16771 applies to the joining of new, grooved rails as described in EN 14811 of the same profile and steel grade. Welding of construction profiles and machined profiles are not covered in BS EN 16771

Note2: Compliance with the requirements of BS EN 16771 does not in itself ensure the suitability of a welding process for specific conditions of track and traffic.

Note3: BS EN 16771 does not cover welds made between different rail sections, worn rails or different rail grades.

Who is BS EN 16771 - Aluminothermic welding of grooved rails for?

BS EN 16771 on aluminothermic welding of grooved rails is useful for:

  • Railway Board
  • Rail manufacturers
  • Railway authorities
  • Manufacturers and suppliers of railways equipment
  • Welders and welding contractors/sub-contractors
  • Inspection teams
  • Process suppliers

Why should you use BS EN 16771 - Aluminothermic welding of grooved rails

BS EN 16771 gives laboratory tests and requirements for approval of aluminothermic welding of grooved rails process.

BS EN 16771 can help establish the system for welder training and testing, as well as the approval of aluminothermic welding contractors.

By complying with the standardized aluminothermic welding process requirements under BS EN 16771, you can ensure reliability in the operational efficiency and the safety of the overall railway infrastructure.
