What is ISO 19659-2 about ?  

ISO 19659-2 is the second part of a multi-series of international standards on railway applications. ISO 19659-2 specifies a general approach for achieving thermal comfort for passenger compartments or saloons of railway vehicles (single-level or double-decker) such as mainline, regional/suburban and urban vehicles used in public transportation services. 

ISO 19659-2 also describes guidelines to specify conditions, performance values and the comfort parameter measurement methods for compartments, saloons and local annexes. 

Note: ISO 19659-2 does not apply to the thermal comfort of the cab driver.

ISO 19659-2 on thermal comfort is relevant to: 

  • Manufacturers of railway rolling stocks

Why should you use ISO 19659-2 ?  

Thermal comfort is the condition that expresses satisfaction with the thermal environment. The main purposes of the HVAC system are to help maintain good indoor air quality through adequate ventilation with filtration. 

ISO 19659-2 explains the category of passenger railway vehicles into three types that consider average passenger travel time and average time between station stops next to each other that includes: 

  • Category 1 (e.g. mainline, intercity, long-distance, high speed) 
  • Category 2 (e.g. suburban, commuter, regional) 
  • Category 3 (e.g. urban, LRV, tram, metro/subway) 

ISO 19659-2 provides the exterior/interior design conditions in accordance with temperature and corresponding relative humidity, solar radiation, altitude and train speed. 

Interior temperature setting according to the category of passenger railway vehicles and thermal comfort parameters which varies from passenger requirements in different regions and the air movement test and the climatic test is given in ISO 19659-2 to evaluate the function, performance, thermal comfort parameters and reliability of the HVAC system installed on a passenger railway vehicle. 

Also provides the general characteristics of the test facility and equipment that should be capable of providing and maintaining the temperature, relative humidity, occupation, wind speed and equivalent solar load within the necessary tolerances. 

Furthermore, ISO 19659-2 let you design and manufacture HVAC systems for railway passenger coaches in order to regulate temperature and air quality on crowded trains battling with accumulated body heat.
