What is BS EN 455452 - Fire protection on railway vehicles about?

BS EN 455452 is the second part of the BS EN 45545 series of documents that specifies the reaction to fire performance requirements for materials and products used on railway vehicles as defined in EN 45545-1.

The operation and design categories defined in EN 45545-1 are used to establish hazard levels that are used as the basis of a classification system.

For each hazard level, this part specifies the test methods, test conditions, and reaction to fire performance requirements.

NOTE: BS EN 45545‑2 does not describe measures that ensure the preservation of the vehicles in the event of a fire.

Who is BS EN 455452 - Fire protection on railway vehicles for?

BS EN 455452 on fire behaviour of railway materials is useful for:

  • Railway designer and engineer
  • Railway operators and crew
  • Manufacturers of railway rolling stock materials

Why should you use BS EN 455452 - Fire protection on railway vehicles?

Fire-proof materials and products in railway vehicles minimize the occurrence of a fire and prevent the spread of smoke and flames giving passengers and staff more time to evacuate and thus save lives. BS EN 455452 provides the test methods in order to achieve the highest level of safety possible in the event of a fire.

BS EN 45545-2 includes fire safety objectives and testing methods for passengers and staff to be able to escape from the fire unaided and be able to reach a place of safety.

BS EN 455452 provides requirements on material and products in different requirement sets (R-sets), which contain different testing methods together with acceptance criteria for different hazard levels (HL) and provides refurbishment and maintenance requirements of the railway vehicle and passenger seats.

Overall, BS EN 45545-2 helps you with the classification of railway vehicles in accordance with the fire hazard level associated with their design and operation which includes fire resistance testing of walls, floorings, electrical cabinets, etc. for the safety of railway operators and passengers.

What’s changed since the last update?

BS EN 455452:2020 supersedes EN 45545-2:2013+A1:2015. BS EN 455452:2020 includes some technical changes with respect to EN 45545-2:2013+A1:2015. These include:
